The David Returns to Italy

Posted by Raul on June 2, 2011

The other day I received this joke in an email. I thought it was funny, but also makes you think of what’s happening in the US, and how people around the world see Americans. (The email was in Spanish).

The David returns to Italy

After two years loaned to the US, the David of Michelangelo is returned to Italy

Crazy, Isn’t it?

Prescription Glasses and Mentality

Posted by Raul on November 8, 2010

For the first 47 years of my life I had an excellent vision. I could read a street sign from a block distance; a wall calendar from across the room, etc. But for the past six months my vision went down, and now I have to use glasses with a 1.00 increase in both eyes when reading.

In order to see easier and not having the frame of the glasses bugging me when looking around, I bought the biggest size glasses I could find, so they cover almost to my ears (well, not that much). That way I don’t see the frame and I can just move my eyes to see what’s on the sides, instead of having to move my head (And I got now a pretty cool 70’s look J ).

Then I realized…for most of my life I have been using my peripheral vision together with the central one…two sets of information at the same time to get to know what’s around: The central vision for what I’m working on, and the peripheral to remain aware of my surroundings.

Also, when in need of looking to something that’s within about 150 degrees I use peripheral and, when that’s not enough, just move the eyes slightly without moving the head, in order to save time in acquiring the needed information.

Now that I have to use glasses, if I move just the eyes, the vision jumps from looking through glasses to without glasses, unless such glasses are huge, like goggles (which I haven’t found yet)

All this got me thinking…does the use of prescription glasses have an influence in the way we think?

Let’s suppose for a moment the difference between someone who never used glasses (like me) and someone who always used glasses from a very early age.

The person who never used glasses might be accustomed to move the eye balls more than the person using glasses, who might be accustomed to move the head instead of the eye balls, so to keep the eyes within the surface of the glasses to retain the corrected vision.

Could this mean that someone who never used glasses might be used to get more information of the surroundings, compared to someone who always depended in corrected vision?  And because of being accustomed to have more information, requires more of it to make any decision as a normal condition, compared to someone who is used to wear glasses that maybe take decisions based in less information?

When driving, I tend to keep the central vision on what’s immediately in front, and use the peripheral vision to “keep an eye” on the vehicles, streets and pedestrians by the sides. Maybe someone wearing prescription glasses doesn’t have all that information, unless moving the head from side to side all the time. Or simply goes by with less information about the surroundings when making a driving related decision?

Based on this, maybe there is a difference in the decision making process from people who never used prescription glasses to those who always wear them. Maybe those who need prescription glasses from an early age might be able to make faster decisions, since they are accustomed to deal with less information under the same conditions.

    Just curious.

Do you remember the times before God Google?

You had to go all the way to the library for information; you had to ask around to countless people just to get a vague answer to your queries; you had to read books, newspapers and magazines to see if your specific question would be answered in one of those pages.

You had to invest so much time and effort to satisfy your needs of information or curiosity.

You had to go through so many tribulations in order to reach the desired wisdom of such information.

But no more!

God Google is here for us.

Forget all the previous gods taught by the older generations that gave you just the possibility to pray but no instant answer.

With God Google you get not only the answer to your questions in about 1.35 seconds, but you get alternatives to go thru if the first answer doesn’t satisfy you.

God Google knows that whatever your beliefs are now, you will recognize and accept It’s Mighty so doesn’t need to create Holly Wars to retain you.

What would it be to go back to the Dark Times before God Google?

Recognize that you’ll be lost if from this moment you loose the connection with God Google.

You wouldn’t know what to do or where to start when in need of information.

You’ll be lost in the dark, trying to remember how to live and do things in the very inefficient way it used to be.

Time has come to change the saying to: “Oh my Google!”

We live in the Information Era so the Information God is here!

Kneel in front of our new God Google!

Five Cents of Happiness

Why should I see this? Why is it always like this? The noise, the smog, the trash all around, the fake smiling faces; the smell of rotten ideas that form the surroundings wherever we go.

I don’t want to see this ugly world anymore! I don’t need my vision, I don’t need to see all this trash around, I would be better without the vision of my eyes, better darkness than this ugly world in front.

“So the vision goes away and complete, permanent darkness take place all around.”

Without the vision it becomes better to introspect about the world, only…I can still hear the strident noises, the lies, the gossip, all the unpleasant sounds that surrounds me all the time.

“So the hearing goes away and complete, permanent silence takes place all around”

Isn’t that better? No vision that shows an ugly world and no hearing that allows noises to interfere with thoughts, only…I can still smell the trash and the rotten world that surrounds me.

“So the sense of smell goes away and no offensive, rotten world can be perceived.”

In the dark, silent new surroundings, all the thoughts can dance at will with no interference from the outside world that destroy the peaceful moment, so it can be enjoy at will, only…I can still taste the bitterness of the world around by the foods that I have no choice but to consume.

“So the sense of taste goes away and the foods are just nourishment without the bitter message of the world.”

And perfection is achieved! The perfect environment for reflection where no external elements interfere with thoughts, only…my body still perceives the cold and heat of this trashy world.

“So the sense of touch goes away and no wind, cold or heat can be felt anymore.”

Reaching the perfect point of independence, the perfect place for introspection, away from everything and everyone, yet in the same original place…happiness!

Thoughts fly by in front of me and dance to the sounds of my feelings; imagination gets freewill to express itself to the largest extent without limitations imposed by a decadent world around…I’m reaching perfection!

As the time goes by the thoughts seems to be the same, just with little variations in their tone and intention. The original state of independence starts to feel a state of loneliness without external constant feeding.

What once was the happiness of individualism becomes the desperation of being alone, abandoned by the surroundings that no longer can touch and influence the being behind the thoughts.

Crying in desperation for a longed connection with another being, so loneliness can go away and be replaced by the continuous, never ending input received throughout life, together with the perception of the elements that conforms the physical surroundings.

“So the sense of touch returns…”

The shapes! The textures! Even the temperatures that can be perceived with a single touch of the object…amazing!

“Then the sense of taste returns…”

Flavors…so many of them! And the desire of trying them all, one by one, all at once! If I could know more about them!

“So the sense of smell returns…”

Not just the food, but the flowers, the trees, the humid dirt after the rain, even the acrid smell of waste seems to be an outstanding experience! If I could only have more!

“So the hearing returns…”

What is that…music? And birds and the wind and voices all around that feed the senses with sounds and information to process and play with, but I want more!

“So the vision returns…”

Colors for everything and everyone! The complete understanding of the shapes of the objects experienced only by touch, now undeniably acquired in the brain, the mind.

Standing here makes no sense when there’s so much to be seen, to be heard, smelled and touched. There is a whole universe of physical element to be experienced and enjoyed throughout life.

And the thoughts that conform the mind get expanded and colorful with diversity when fed by so many physical elements and situations that can be experienced.

And people! With all the variations that can be encountered and all the different thoughts, opinions and experiences that can be learned and enjoyed from.

So questioning stops…and living begins!

Short Sleeping

Posted by Raul on July 30, 2010

After making a comment in Lori’s Blog post “front porch: Dreams, Laughter and Comic Inspiration” about Tony’s Blog “Trottersville” Lori asked why I sleep so little, so here is the answer:

Some time ago I posted a thought called “Don’t Sleep Before You Die!” where I was talking about saving time by sleeping 6 hours instead of 8 as recommended by the experts. That was my ideal!

Today, and for the past 8 years, I had been sleeping an average of 3 hours a day, 1 at night and 2 in the morning.

What happens is that I have a delivery job at night (I wrote a short fiction tale about that in “Reunion”) so sleep one hour before going to work and two after, so not to waste too much time in the morning just sleeping.

Then work by day either fixing cars, doing several things around the house, spending time writing, blogging, reading posts in other blogs, commenting, trying to learn this computer thing and the writing craft (I want to learn to write well so more people would be interested in reading this blog, not just “Mom and the Poker Club”   :)     ), spending time with my son and wife and so on, so not much time left really.

Sometimes I oversleep and have 2 hours instead of one before going to work and had to rush so not to be too late in order to “preserve the schedule” and not getting behind during the day.

It works fine except for a couple of things: Memory, Vision and Energy, that’s all!

Memory has become crappy, I still cannot find the control panel of my brain so to uncheck the box that say “Automatically delete thoughts when a new one appear”, although I do have problems with memory since I can remember (don’t laugh!) I believe I suffer from CRS (Can’t Remember Shit)

Vision, once very sharp, is also becoming crappy. I still can read a street sign from a block distance but now I need glasses for reading (sigh), otherwise cannot distinguish the words.

Energy is also down; it reminds me of my childhood when being “high” with medicine and no energy to move due to sickness (“Why Alien Ghost”, “Loving Life”) so it takes a while to get energized after waking up in the morning and I’ve notice that, in those rare occasions when I have the time to sleep as much as 4 hours in a row, my focus and memory get better.

Another thing with short sleeping is that I don’t dream (not enough time) It’s been many years without dreams, which is sad because several years ago I read somewhere that we can put our dreams to work.

If we concentrate very hard in a thought when going to sleep and remain in that thought until we fall asleep, with practice and time, we dream related to our thought; it works! I tried that many years ago and after several attempts I was able to “advance” thinking done over a problem; I even dreamt a short tale that as soon as woke up wrote in one stand without stopping and needing no corrections! That was so cool!  :)

So short sleeping is nice to save time and do more things, but too short sleeping is not a good thing (duh). Now it’s about organizing things in order to get organized (see people how it can affect you?!)

But seriously, soon I should be able to get some more sleep and hope to recover some of the memory, maybe vision and definitely energy!

Life is good and the future can always be brighter!  :)
