The Joke of The Lone Ranger

There was this joke from a Chilean comedian who was really frustrated because every time he told the joke nobody laughed…because nobody understood it, even though is about the concept Chileans have about themselves.

“So there were The Lone Ranger and Tonto, hiding behind a small boulder while shooting to the Indians all around them. Then they run out of bullets and the Indians started to approach them, knives in hand, ready to kill them.

“We are doomed” Said the Lone Ranger.

You might be doomed” Answered Tonto.

I’m just curious how many people will get the joke. Let me know in the comment section.

  1. Hi Raul.
I don’t think I get the joke. I’ve tried to intellectualize it, believing that Tonto might not be doomed because he is in fact a Native American. But I don’t think that’s it because it doesn’t make me laugh :)

    Hi Davina,

Yes, Tonto is a native american, so he has the chance to switch sides. The joke is about the people who does just that, switching sides when things get out of hands, so they are never in the loser’s side.

  2. Hey Raul,
After reading it many times, I could not categorize it as a joke. It is only a piece of discussion.
Bu anyway, if you can elaborate this joke we will try to laugh out loud.

    Hi Nazim,

It is a joke, only a local one, so it doesn’t be funny in other countries.

    Hi Kelvin,

As I replied to Davina above, it is about switching sides when things become complicated.

Don’t worry, as I mentoned in the post, not even the people the joke was intended to could understand it.

Think I got it Raul – Tonto is an Indian so he’s OK.

A Public Speaking friend of mine used to tell a joke about selling insurance.

Can’t remember the joke but the final line was….

“Don’t blame me, I’m only the lone aranger.”

    Always got a good laugh.

    Hi Hilary,

It seems 50 percent of the people commenting got the joke, but nobody found it funny. It’s OK since the sense of humor varies from country to country.

“Lone aranger?” For people in my country it could be scary to be completely in the hands of this person; which proves how different the sense of humor can be from country to country.

    Thanks for stopping.

A lot of humour is also about delivery.
Not possible to get a sense of how a joke is delivered when it’s written down.

That’s true! Got to be a different way between spoken and written. Also many really bad jokes can be very funny because of the comedian rather the joke itself.

It is the same when we translate English language jokes, into Spanish…They are no longer funny. I guess, if you have to explain it, it looses its punch. There is also the fact that this is a “local” joke. Only if you are from the place, and you are also well informed (this is joke of political cognotations, about switching sides in order to be safe…something many did at one timne of another, specially during the dictatorship times) you will get it. I would say that, here in the States this joke will apply to the “independents”…

    I don’t get it!

    Just joking (or kidding) :)
