About Chewing Gum

A short one:
I don’t chew gum, so I don’t know. To try to find an answer, sometime ago I “tested” a chewing gum and found no difference.
What I’ve seen is that people who eat with their mouths closed, chew gum with their mouths open; have you noticed? Why is that?
Any enlightening? What makes the difference? Just curious

Haha, I’ve never noticed that people who eat with their mouths open also chew gum that way. But when you think about it, it makes sense.
I have not tried chewing gum until I was 22 or so. I just don’t really see the point of chewing something that becomes tasteless and doesn’t get swallowed eventually. I would still take it if it’s offered to me though.

Hi Kelvin,
What I found curious is when they eat with their mouth closed yet chew gum with their mouth open.
So far in my life I’ve found only one (1) person who also chew gum with her mouth closed, which would make more sense to me.
I share with you the point for not chewing gum…other than a way to get a better breath

Ah, I didn’t read that right. Well, I guess they, having chewed all their food with mouth closed all their lives, want a break every now and then. (And it makes me wonder I, who chew with mouth closed normally, would do.)

LOL, that’s a great point! We all need to take a break from time to time

I’ve never paid much attention, but open mouth chewing in either case is very annoying.

Hi Eric,
I agree with you on the annoying point of view.

Raul,
This is a funny one, but it does me think:~) I had some gum in my purse and decided to test things out. I realized it’s actually hard to chew gum with your mouth closed. It kind of like a rubber band; it forces you to open your mouth…
UH OH…wait a minute. I tried not to, but I forget that this bubble gum I’m chewing and I just blew this huge pink bubble, which popped all over my face.
So, my test proved that not only does gum make you open your mouth, but it also makes you do stupid stuff, like blowing bubbles, which can be very messy:~)

Hi Sara,
“It kind of like a rubber band; it forces you to open your mouth…”
That would be a very good reason…and if it sticks to the teeth, double reason to reach the maximum distance possible, so to “un-stick” the teeth. Now, blowing bubbles seems to be entertaining, especially for children, who seems to compete on blowing the biggest bubble of all.
Thank you for doing the test and telling about your findings; and sorry for the mess! I’m glad I wasn’t asking something about hand grenades

Hi Evelyn,
I’ve heard of chewing gum being banned in Singapore, but I thought it was one of those “taste” rumors only. For those of us who don’t chew gum it is fine, but I’m sorry for those who wish they could have one now and then

Raul,
I do not chew gum and somehow never got in to it. My uncle thinks that all arrogant and silly teens are the ones who chew gums! I know it is sterotype but it seems to work for him.
Evelyn, chewing gum is banned in singapore? I did not know. Wow!

Hi Zengirl,
Glad to see you here and not in my spam folder!
I assume the comment posting problem with Akismet is solved.
Funny what you mention about your uncle, since my father has similar thoughts about chewing gum; which somehow promoted the non-use of it, although, I don’t remember being forbidden to chew gum.

I only like to chew gum to blow bubbles. It’s almost impossible to be a serious adult while blowing giant pink bubbles!

Hi Solita,
Giant pink bubbles…as a trademark of a childish adult! The careless years extended forever!

Our dad used to say “If you chew gum, your jaw will fall off!” Scared me enough not to even try it. As a teacher, gum is a constant battle with my students. It is not allowed in school, for it always ends up stuck under desks, on chairs, the carpet and mostly on my shoes. A while ago some “genius” did a “gum” research study and concluded chewing gum allows students to “concentrate”…That’s the only “study” my students remember! I don’t buy it. Chewing gun is such a strange habit, and yes, I have noticed that while people chew food with their mouth closed, it seems that they really put great effort and dedication on the silly act of gum chewing and make us watch them while they do their best “cow chewing food” impression!!! Lovely…

““cow chewing food” impression!!!”
That’s funny; I didn’t relate open mouth chewing with cow chewing, but now that you mention it, I can visualize the “scene”
Seems to be a big problem in schools…maybe that’s why it’s banned in Singapore.
