Ads in Blogs

Reading several blogs I noticed the amount of publicity the blogger have in every page. It seems like a good way to make some money out of the time spent bloggin, but I wonder, is it really worth?

As you might have noticed I don’t have any publicity in my blog and the reason is simply I don’t have a clue about how it is done and, more important, if it really makes any money at all.

In a job I had several years ago there was a guy who needed more money so he had three full time and one part time jobs; needless to say he didn’t perform in any of those since he had to spend time sleeping in each one of them, and the rest of the time he was too tired to really do something. I thought if he needed more money he should have a job that pays more per hour than more jobs at the same pay rate.

With ads in blogs I heard you get paid cents every time someone clicks in one of the ads in your pages, so it seems that having a hundred thousand places where people click in ads, at cents the click, the money collected should be good (Google’s business), but for the one with one blog it’ll be no business at all (bloggers).

For the blogger it could be a good deal only if he/she has thousands of visitors a day so even a small percentage of them clicking those ads will still generate some money, but the amount of blogs out there, in relation to the amount of people reading them, considering the amount of time that people spend reading and clicking doesn’t seem to give a good number.

Seen in a different way; if there were only ten blogs in the net for all the people who read, comment and click ads it probably would be an amazing deal, but for the amount of blogs that really are…

Professional bloggers with a big number of followers probably makes good money with ads (I think) but that would be a small “elite” of people while the big majority would be just making Google’s business.

It is my opinion that if no real money is to be made with ads, then why annoy readers with them when they take the time to visit and read a blog, and as I mention before, since I don’t have ads in my blog, I don’t know how much money is generated (in reality, not what Google say)

So, for those of you who have ads in your blogs, let me ask you: Is it worth? How much money do you make in reality? Is it worth the time spent putting ads, having a specific theme that allows ads, etc? Let me know the truth.

Yes, you do need to have some traffic to earn any kind of consistent income with advertisements on blogs. I do not have that kind of traffic, so I thought “what a I going to earn? 60 cents a year?” In that case, why don’t I just donate 60 cents to this website so neither you, nor I have to look at those ugly ads?

From what I’ve heard though, the bigger blogs often have coaching, affiliate marketing, or information products as their main source of income. AdSense? Usually not the big chunk. Of course, it varies from site to site.

I imagined that the main source of income for a blog would be the services and/or products they offer, rather than from the ads they have.

Somehow it is good though, that way there’s no need to place ads in a blog :)

  2. Hi Raul,

I’ve gone back and forth on this. First my thought was if a blogger wants to monetize their blog, why not do it from the get-go. I tried that with my blogging blog, but had very poor results.

Then I went to just a few ads and now just have one.

That said, on my other blogs I use more monetization and actually have decent luck with AdSense. The first few months were terrible, just cents, but as the traffic on the blogs picked up, so did my earnings. I make enough to cover my blogging expenses plus a little more, but can’t say I’m getting rich – yet!

From what I’ve seen online, with the exception of the probloggers, it appears a lot of those who make money with blogs are doing so because of a service or product they offer. So in that case, it’s not our blog that is making us money, but what we’re doing with it.

    Hi Barbara,

I’ve seen many blogs with very little “traffic” and lots of ads, that’s why I was curious.

So it seems that all the publicity about monetizing a blog is not so true, you don’t make money creating a blog to put ads in it, you can make money when you use a blog to promote an existing service or product you can offer in it.

    Thank you for your insight.

I’ve been blogging for only a month and I had mere cents out of it. But your probably right saying that you can only make money when you have a large audience.
If your really looking to add ads on your site it really easy with adsense I haven’t tried any other ads network though.

    Hi Jack,

It really seems that the money comes from the services provided rather than ads in the blog.

I guess if there is a good traffic then it wouldn’t hurt to try some ads and see how much it’ll generate.
